About the webinar
This webinar examines how assessment in English Language Teaching (ELT) can function as a tool for learning rather than merely evaluation. Through SDG-aligned assessment tasks, teachers can support equitable practices, encourage higher-order thinking, and empower learners to take greater responsibility for their learning as they develop English proficiency. Participants will engage with practical, research-informed strategies for creating inclusive and equitable assessment tasks that promote students critical thinking and learners’ autonomy. The session will highlight the use of self- and peer-assessment, reflective practices, and dialogic feedback to encourage higher-order thinking and sustained learner engagement. These approaches are adaptable across diverse levels and ELT contexts and connecting language learning with real-world classroom contexts. In the final stage, participants will critically examine their existing assessment practices and identify opportunities to integrate one or two SDG-informed tasks into their own classrooms contexts. By the end of the webinar, attendees will gain concrete ideas, adaptable templates, and practical tools to design assessments that are purposeful, inclusive, and supportive to enhance learner agency and critical thinking.
About the speaker
Dr. Kefyalew Woreta Haile is a senior lecturer and researcher at Wolaita Sodo University in Ethiopia, specializing in English Language Teaching (ELT). He has over 17 years of teaching experience across various educational levels. Dr. Kefyalew has participated in British Council webinars, earning multiple professional development certificates. He is committed to training secondary school teachers and university instructors in innovative ELT methods to improve language learning. He is eager to collaborate with the school teachers and teacher educators to share his expertise and contribute to the professional growth of English language teachers worldwide.
