In a recent discussion titled Cultivating Empathy in the Language Classroom: Understanding Learners' Perspectives, on the SSA TeachingEnglish community of practice, she highlighted the vital role empathy plays in effective teaching. She reminded teachers that every student carries a unique story: some may be living with ADHD, experiencing domestic challenges, caring for ill family members, living with relatives, or struggling with financial hardship. These personal circumstances often shape how students learn and behave.
As educators, it's essential to approach our classrooms with empathy and compassion. More than that, we must actively model these values for our students. When students feel seen, heard, and understood, trust begins to grow. This trust creates a safe and supportive learning environment, where students are more likely to engage, ask questions, and take academic risks. Ultimately, empathy not only humanises our teaching but also enhances learning outcomes. - Dr. Adebola Karamah Shogbuyi
