Question: How can we use technology to teach more effectively?

Answer: By co-operating with other teachers, involving parents and finding free resources online.

Research has shown that technology, when applied effectively and purposefully, significantly enhances learner engagement and impacts education positively. However, some teachers encounter challenges incorporating technology into their teaching. Let’s explore the different factors behind these challenges and how you can overcome them.

1. What are the factors/ challenges behind low technology adoption in some teaching communities?

  • The government provides little or no significant pre-service and in-service training for teachers on the use of technology.
  • Schools in underserved areas may not adopt the use of technology due to a lack of electricity, equipment and resources.
  • Teachers may use traditional methods and not believe that technology can be used as part of effective teaching. They might see technology as distraction.

2. What do we recommend?

  • Use available technology: use tools that are easily accessible even to learners. These could be phones, radios, projectors, and basic apps.
  • Collaborate with other teachers: Team up with other colleagues to share ideas and resources.
  • Involve Parents: hold meetings with parents to explain how crucial it is to adopt technology in education and accentuate on its benefits on learners.
  • Search free online resources: find online resources to support your teaching and learning from TeachingEnglish Africa and other websites. If you find a useful website, bookmark it so you can visit it again when you next need ideas.
