Question: Why is it important to give clear instructions?

Answer: If your learners know what to do, activities will be effective.

When you give instructions for an activity, there are many ways you can help make them clear.

  • use simple language (the instruction should be easier than the activity)
  • use gestures
  • make them short
  • use words like: first, then, next …

Instructions should include:

  • what to do
  • who to work with
  • how long the learners have

It’s also important to check the instructions.

Don’t ask: 'Do you understand?', use Comprehension Check Questions (CCQs) or demonstrate the activity.

How will you try to improve your instructions?
