Question: How can we create more inclusive classrooms that engage all types of learners?
Answer: by integrating ICT tools that combine text, audio, and video—making lessons more accessible, interactive, and less dependent on traditional chalk-and-board methods.
Learners of all abilities can be disadvantaged and feel excluded by the traditional chalk and board lesson activities. However, using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) allows all learners to be included with engaging activities without spending hours writing on the board. Here are five (5) ICT resources that provide the perfect opportunity to integrate text, audio or video in lessons.
Using Xrecorder and WhatsApp
XRecorder is a third-party app that can be used to record WhatsApp video calls on Android devices. It can also be used to record gameplay, tutorials, and other videos. It is easy and fun to use.
At the start of the academic year, create separate WhatsApp groups for all the classes you teach. Then you are ready to use Xrecorder and WhatsApp throughout the year.
Using Canva
Canva is a graphic design platform that allows users to create visual content. It offers a variety of editable templates that allow novices and experts to create flyers, invitations, animations, videos and much more.
One example is to teach learners how to design business logos after lessons on writing advertisements for instance or designing birthday party invitations.
Using an e-dictionary
An electronic dictionary (e-dictionary) is a digital version of a dictionary that can be accessed through a computer, mobile device, or the web. E-dictionaries can include definitions, pronunciations, example sentences, and more.
A British English E-dictionary is useful when you come across words you need to teach learners how to pronounce. This is my regular pronunciation consultant.
You can also use the e-dictionary downloaded in your phone to quickly check the meaning of a word you come across during reading or any other activity that may need to be clarified immediately.
Words like loss [ /lɒs/ , lose /luːz/ and loose /lu:s/ may need to be clarified to students during a vocabulary lesson on homophones.
Spelling differences in British and American English such as favour / favor, defence / defense can also be clarified using an e-dictionary.
Using Quizizz for assessment
The Quizizz app is a tool that allows learners to take assessments in a quizlike form. After teaching a topic, you could forward the link to exercises to their WhatsApp or Google Classroom.
That way, they take exercises or even tests without elaborate note take. This proves quite exciting to learners. Besides the app grades and you can share the performance with parents via email or WhatsApp. their own or participate in group activities. It is available on Google Play and the App Store.
You can use Quizizz can be used to set multiple-choice, gap fills or word clouds with the free options. This also makes revision easy and faster.
The setting can be adjusted to enable correct answers to pop up. You can also set a time limit to prevent cheating. It provides feedback on whether an answer is correct or wrong.
Students enjoy it as it is a fun and fast way to learn and to be assessed.
Now you have some new ideas on how to include all students using these ICT resources. Which one will you try first?
